When it comes to kids’ nutrition, simple really is best. Small, intentional changes made consistently can have a powerful impact over time. Here are three easy lunchbox principles to support growth, boost nutrients, and make feeding kids feel a little less stressful.
1. Choose wholemeal or wholegrain bread over white
One of the easiest swaps you can make is choosing wholemeal or wholegrain bread instead of white. This small change significantly increases fibre intake and often provides extra micronutrients that are important for growing bodies. The added fibre supports gut health by promoting regular digestion and helping children feel fuller for longer. This can contribute to steadier energy levels and improved concentration throughout the school day – and often, happier tummies too.
If wholemeal or wholegrain bread isn’t accepted yet, that’s okay. A high-fibre white bread can be a great stepping stone, allowing you to boost fibre intake while still meeting your child where they’re at.
2. Always add at least one fruit or vegetable
This doesn’t need to be perfect or Pinterest-worthy. The goal is exposure, not volume. Add one fruit or vegetable that your child will accept, even if it’s just a few cucumber slices or a single strawberry. Regular exposure helps build familiarity, normalises colour in the lunchbox, and reduces pressure around “trying” new foods. Over time, these repeated, low-stress exposures are what help children feel more comfortable saying yes to new fruits and vegetables. Consistency matters far more than variety in the early stages.
3. Include a quality protein source
Protein is essential for growth, muscle development, and keeping kids full and focused. Where possible, aim to include a quality protein source and limit processed meats like ham and salami. These are ultra-processed and high in salt, offering little nutritional benefit for growing bodies. Instead, choose options like chicken, eggs, tuna/salmon, tofu, legumes, hummus, or yoghurt. These foods provide protein without unnecessary additives and support sustained energy throughout the day.
Feeding kids well doesn’t require a complete lunchbox overhaul. Small, intentional changes done consistently, make a real difference over time. Start with one swap, build from there, and remember that progress always beats perfection.
