5 Tips for Turning your New Year’s Motivation into Sustainable Habits

Motivation to make healthier lifestyle choices is often at an all-time high at the start of a new year. However, for many of us, this motivation is short-lived – and we end up back where we started before we know it.

If you’ve set ambitious goals in previous years only to feel burnt out by February, you’re not alone! Read on for our top five tips to challenge your approach to the new year, and use your motivation to create new habits that will last.

Tip #1: Challenge the all-or-nothing mindset

One of the most effective ways to create sustainable habits that last is to challenge the idea of being all in, or completely out of routine. While it can feel like the most effective option in the short term, long-term success lies in creating small habits that you can build on over time. Rather than thinking about the end goal, think about one small step you can take to get the ball rolling and get you one step closer to your goal.

Remember, consistency beats perfection every time!

Tip #2: Think about your why

Before setting any goals for the new year, it can be helpful to pause and reflect on why you want to make changes. Creating goals that are meaningful to you can help boost motivation and increase your chances of success. Try setting intentions about how you want to feel and the habits you want to build to get you there. By focusing on how you will feel and the reason behind your goals, it makes it easier to build the consistency of these changes even when life gets hectic.

Tip #3: Think about what you can add, rather than remove

A positive and sustainable approach to improving your nutrition and overall health prioritises adding supportive behaviours, rather than eliminating foods or food groups.

For example, you may think about:

  • Adding regular meals and snacks to support stable energy levels
  • Increasing your intake of fibre-rich foods by adding more veggies at lunch and dinner
  • Drinking more water throughout the day
  • Including a source of protein in your meals and snacks to support satiety and energy levels

Tip #4: Set SMART goals

You are much more likely to achieve your goals if you’ve made them clear and realistic. SMART goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Including each of these components when setting your goals, can help turn a vague intention into a goal you can achieve. Setting SMART goals provides clarity on: what you are doing, how often you are doing it and how long you are doing it for, while still allowing some flexibility. Keeping goals achievable and relevant can be the key to setting yourself up for success throughout the whole year.

Tip #5: Create space for flexibility

Let’s be honest, it’s very rare to go for months without any challenges that may hinder your goals. By creating flexibility in your approach, it allows you to work towards your goals alongside life’s challenges without having to constantly fight against them. Try creating a balanced goal which allows for some variety and enjoyment, such as enjoying a dinner out with friends and resting where needed, while also allowing time to focus on your progress. Giving yourself the flexibility to adjust your goals and focus allows you to create new habits that are sustainable year-round, not just for the first few weeks of January.

Remember, the new year doesn’t need a complete overhaul to see you successfully create new habits in the new year. Focus on progress over perfection, set realistic intentions and prioritise small, sustainable changes to allow you to navigate the new year in a way that’s in line with your own health goals.

Change isn’t built in January alone, it requires consistent choices throughout the year to leave you feeling your best in the long-term!
